On Wednesday, August 9th, Scioto hosted our first ever Community Shred Day at our home offices in Powell, Ohio. We invited over our trusty shredders at Fireproof Records to set up shop for the afternoon and take everyone’s sensitive paper documents to be shredded. We spread the word and sent out invites to the offices in the neighborhood, encouraging them to come by and drop off as much they want for free. But the best part? We also invited over some of our friend sat Canine Companions for Independence and their service dogs.
Canine Companions for Independence is a nationwide organization that provides highly trained assistance dogs for people with disabilities. Scioto has been a sponsor of their services locally for quite some time and in light of their upcoming 2017 DogFest Walk ‘n Roll, we thought it would be a good time to try and help them spread some awareness and raise some donations.
We were lucky enough to have Volunteer Coordinator Lori and Volunteer Puppy Raisers Roxanne and Kathy join us in Powell that afternoon for the Shred Day along with their two esteemed Companions in training, Naci and Fonz. We learned quite a lot about the important services these dogs and their trainers provide across the country and how becoming a volunteer can make quite the difference. Before becoming someone’s official assistance dog, each puppy must go through a comprehensive training program in hopes of meeting the high standards set for their graduation. Puppy Raisers are constantly working with and caring for their pups and set aside time daily for training and attending obedience classes. If you believe you could provide this sort of dedication, check out how to apply to become a Puppy Raiser. And for those that want to get involved in other ways, here are some great ways to do so.
Just as we hoped, both the Community Shred Day at Scioto and the Canine Companions DogFest Walk ‘n Roll were successes, making for a great week. We’re looking forward to finding new ways to get involved in the local community and continue to support great causes.
