June is National Family Month and marks the first days of summer. Because of the pandemic, most people have spent considerably more time inside their homes than ever before. Now that states have lifted restrictions let’s celebrate by spending more time with the vulnerable members of our family. The stay-at-home orders and social distancing have caused significant feelings of loneliness and isolation among seniors, individuals with disabilities, and those with a mental health diagnosis.

This brings me to the subject of home and community-based services (HCBS). HCBS gained much attention for addressing social determinants of health. HCBS provides opportunities for Medicaid beneficiaries to receive services in their own home or community rather than institutions or other isolated settings. Coupled with the proposed HCBS Access Act and this week’s Supreme Court ruling that upheld the Affordable Care Act, 2021 is shaping up to be a healthy year.
