Direct Support Providers (DSPs) afford vital support to their communities. Offering a range of services to people with disabilities, DSPs allow the people they serve to live, work and enjoy life as independently as possible. This week, Direct Support Providers Week, Scioto Properties is proud to recognize the passion and impact DSPs have across the country, making a difference in the daily lives of people with disabilities.
Today, there are 3.6 million DSPs working in the United States. According to ANCOR (American Network of Community Resources) the need for DSPs in the community is expected to increase by 35 percent in the next year. With increasing needs and opportunities, DSPs are often one of the least supported professionals in terms of wage and training, leading to a critical shortage of workers in the community.
Low wages are just one of the many reasons recruitment and retention is difficult in this imperative field. According to Payscale.com, the average rate is between $8-$13 dollars an hour. Lack of standardization is also a concern for many DSPs. Many states have their own set of educational requirements and certifications. Research from the American Network of Community Options and Resources show that increased pay and community support is crucial to the stability of direct care workers. These are the jobs of the future, as a large population is aging and will need more direct care to participate and live as independently as they can.
Join Scioto Properties in showcasing the often unheralded work of DSPs. These unsung heroes of our community receive very little recognition. Many people do not realize the amount of work and dedication required to care for individuals with disabilities. Also, many communities undervalue the contributions people with disabilities add to a community. You can show your support on social media using #DSP2017 #DSPWeek. Watch and share this video and be sure to thank a Direct Support Provider in your community.
All of us at Scioto Properties thank all the hardworking, compassionate DSPs across the country. We commend their work and the difference they make each and every day.
