For students with disabilities adjusting from school to adulthood can be difficult. These students and their families have to take advantage of all resources and services they can find to make this transition as smooth as possible.
Recently, Upper Arlington High School in Columbus, Ohio held a “Transition Fair” to provide students with disabilities resources and materials to help with their journeys to adulthood. Events like this are becoming more popular thanks to schools and disability agencies. There are over 5,500 students in central Ohio with developmental disabilities and it is important that they get the help they need to find programs that support their needs after schooling. Some of the top needs of these students include community based employment, transportation and independent living skills.
Planning is very important for these families. There are actually many resources available and many ways to get connected with the right programs. Attending as many of these fairs as possible is also a great way to get connected and start planning for the future.
